The national parks near New York City come with a caveat worth stating up front: there is no capital-N National Park in New York or New Jersey. The nearest one is Shenandoah, roughly five hours south. What the metro area does have is an unusually dense cluster of National Park Service sites, several of which are reachable by subway, ferry, or a train ride under two hours.
What is the closest actual National Park?
Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is the closest at about five hours by car. Acadia National Park in Maine runs seven to eight hours but rewards a long weekend more than Shenandoah does. If you are set on a full National Park, plan two nights minimum; a day trip from Manhattan is not realistic for either.
For a single day, the NPS sites below are the better answer.
Gateway National Recreation Area
Gateway is the big one, spanning about 27,000 acres across three units in two states. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens is reachable on the A train and is one of the best birding sites on the Atlantic Flyway, with more than 300 species recorded. Sandy Hook in New Jersey has swimmable ocean beaches and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the country. The Staten Island unit includes Great Kills Park and Fort Wadsworth, which sits directly under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
Sandy Hook parking fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. Check the current-year fee and parking rules before you drive out.
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
The Statue of Liberty National Monument includes Ellis Island, and one ferry ticket covers both. Ferries leave from Battery Park in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Crown access is a separate, limited ticket that regularly sells out months ahead; pedestal access is easier to get. Book through the official concessioner rather than a reseller, and check current-year availability windows.
Fire Island National Seashore
Fire Island is about two hours out on Long Island and feels considerably further. The Sunken Forest is a rare maritime holly forest growing in the hollow behind the dunes, and the Otis Pike Wilderness is the only federally designated wilderness in New York State. Most of the island is car-free, reached by ferry.
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Roughly ninety minutes west, Delaware Water Gap covers about 70,000 acres along the Delaware River. The Appalachian Trail runs through it, and waterfall hikes at Dingmans Falls and Raymondskill Falls are short enough for families. This is the strongest option if you want a genuine hiking day rather than a beach or a historic site.
Which historic sites are worth a half day?
Morristown National Historical Park in New Jersey was the first National Historical Park in the country and preserves Washington's winter encampment. Sagamore Hill on Long Island was Theodore Roosevelt's home and summer White House. Inside Manhattan, African Burial Ground National Monument, Federal Hall, Castle Clinton, Hamilton Grange, and Stonewall National Monument are all free and walkable.
